What Lies Beneath
The impetus for this series of screenprint monotypes came from two directions – firstly reading Peter Wohlleben’s The Secret Life of Trees which explains how trees (and plant life as a whole) can communicate beneath the earth and secondly the extraordinary acceleration of coastal erosion from the sea hammering the soft sandstone cliffs along the Suffolk coast around Thorpeness where I spend time each year.
The layered surfaces of the monotypes are often interrupted by textile collage, masking tape applied then removed, brush or spatula interfering with the still-wet ink, and even my hands and fingers.
The ground beneath our feet is not inert and stable but an often fragile but nonetheless vital source of life.
