Seventeen Squared

Project type

Acrylic on canvas

Date

October - December 2022

Location

London, Middlesex University campus

An exploration of prime numbers using a canvas woven from 34 scrap strips which were left over from other canvas stretching. Each square was given a number from 1-289 (17 squared) running left to right across each horizontal strip. Prime numbers (2, 3, 7, 11 etc) were left unpainted - the unprimed primes. Each other square was painted in the colour associated with its highest common multiple, eg silver for 16. Each of the non-prime squares became, in effect, an individual mini canvas.
